Part-time Publishing Assistant  @ Fitzcarraldo Editions

Fitzcarraldo Editions is looking for a part-time (3 days a week) publishing assistant. Providing support to Fitzcarraldo Editions’ publisher, the publishing assistant will be involved in every aspect of the publishing process, including editorial, production, publicity, marketing, foreign rights, and general office administration. The position will suit someone able to work as part of a small team but also willing to use their initiative and work on their own. Experience in publishing is desirable but not required. Attention to detail is essential. Knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.

Agents’ Assistant (Maternity Cover) @ AM Heath

AM Heath need a hard-working and enthusiastic person to cover the maternity leave of one of their agents’ assistants, starting in the first week of November, for a fixed term.

The job involves supporting two senior agents in their representation of authors and estates. Day to day this can include: reading and reporting on manuscripts, author care, diary management, drafting and checking contracts, tracking and chasing payments, manuscripts, publication dates – as well as many other kinds of general administrative support.

They are looking for someone who is efficient, organised, who communicates well and who uses their initiative. You will also need a keen editorial eye, and to be well-read across a range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction.

Publishing Operations Administrator @ Hachette Children’s Group (nope, not really sure what this is either)

This is an important pivotal role for HCG that would suit someone who loves the operational side of things, who enjoys the logic of live systems and data input, and is passionate about ensuring accurate detail is maintained and goes out to the world.

It is not a junior editorial role but a key person who will help to drive efficiency through the systems and processes in a fast paced, modern, multi-imprint publisher. The job will involve maintaining acquisition and schedule meetings and ensuring new acquisitions are correctly set up on Biblio (their publishing software system), running reports and checks on missing data, data cleansing, liaising with IT over issues, system upgrades, and other system-driven administrative tasks that support the publishing process for both digital and print.

Editorial Assistant: Non-Fiction & Faber Social @ Faber & Faber

Faber & Faber are looking for a bright, highly efficient and well-organised Editorial Assistant to provide administrative and general support for the Editorial Director, Non-Fiction and the Director, Faber Social. The job will include administrative backup (such as preparing papers for meetings, booking travel schedules, diary management, writing minutes, etc), communicating with authors, managing and reporting on submissions, drafting catalogue and jacket copy, and other duties as required. 

You will be an avid reader of both contemporary literary fiction and non-fiction, and you will need excellent literary skills as well as first-class communication, organisational and IT skills, a keen eye for detail, and an ability to prioritise. You will also, ideally, have some previous relevant office experience.

Editorial Assistant @ Unbound

Unbound is a uniquely innovative, award-winning and rapidly growing publisher and platform. They publish a broad range of books from established literary names to bloggers and YouTube stars. All their titles have been supported prior to trade publication by an audience passionate about making them available to the general reader.

They’re seeking an enthusiastic candidate to take on a lynchpin role between our commissioning/scouting editorial team and our production and design team. On the one hand you will be supporting a growing team of commissioners across an eclectic list. Tasks will include loading projects on to the website, writing web and marketing copy, administering author contracts and helping project manage books from successful crowdfunding to delivery of manuscript. You will also provide support to the managing editor and the production and design team, maintaining their bibliographic information, liaising with publishing partners, communicating with their authors and collating mark-ups to proofs.

Assistant to MD and Communications Director @ Penguin General (yes, this one is open AGAIN, but I’m thinking if you’ve applied twice and they’ve rejected you twice, it’s probably best not to apply again)

International Sales Assistant (Spanish) – DK IPL

DK International Publishing & Licensing are seeking a confident and enthusiastic Sales Assistant with proven communication skills, both on the telephone and face-to-face, to work in their London office. The Assistant will provide administrative support to Sales Managers within the Spanish language team.

Responsibilities will include: liaising with internal departments and customers, drafting contracts, sending materials to our publishing partners, invoicing, maintaining forecasting systems and databases, tracking titles through the production process and resolving any problems that arise. Whilst providing support for Sales Managers, the Assistant will have the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of the DK business and publishing list.

The candidate must be sales-oriented and fluent in spoken and written Spanish. Knowledge of another language would be an advantage. The candidate must have initiative, strong organisational and interpersonal skills, be motivated by the challenges of a sales environment and have a desire to develop a career within sales. The candidate must be willing to travel if required.

Part-time Publishing Administrator @ Bonnier Publishing (Lincoln)

This will be a varied role for a Publishing Administrator within a fast-paced publishing group. The successful candidate will report directly to the Publisher. As Publishing Administrator you will play an essential role in ensuring that the Bonnier office runs smoothly by providing excellent administrative support across several departments.

Duties will include:

• Managing customer queries.

• Processing and filing invoices.

• Uploading, managing and proof-reading website content.

• Collating metadata to send to retail sites.

• Database entry and management.

• Uploading final information and files of eBooks and print books to retail sites, including Amazon.

• Sending eBook copies to authors.

• Placing print orders for authors, customers and any other parties.

• Updating author forms and sending information to new authors.

• Liaising with all members of the team, undertaking administrative tasks as requested.

• General office maintenance such as filing and ordering office supplies.

Skills and Requirements 

Personal Requirements:

• Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet strict deadlines.

• Ability to prioritise workload and multitask in a fast-paced working environment.

• Excellent attention to detail and a strong grasp of grammar and punctuation.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• The ability to work well within a team.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office and Excel with the ability to quickly adapt to new programmes. Experience working with website content is desirable but not necessary.

• An interest in publishing is desirable.

• Some experience in finance would be beneficial.
